What is an improvised performance?
An improvised performance – as the name suggests – is created on the spot without a script or pre-arranged plot structures. The audience of such performances can enjoy a "tailor-made" show, meaning a story to which they have a real influence. Usually, before such a performance, the actors ask the audience for inspiration.
The audience suggests:
- the setting,
- the situation,
- the motive,
- the relationship between the characters,
– and based on what the actors hear, they create an improvised performance.
Improvisation is both a predisposition and a skill. It is the very act of creating something and acting without preparation. It’s a spontaneous action or reaction.
An improvised performance is a form of spontaneous theatrical art that works in any circumstances. Due to its interactive format, it serves as both an enhancement for a business event and the main attraction of an artistic festival.
Our experience in improv
We’ve performed improvised themed performances:
- at the theater festivals,
- at the Silesian Science Festival,
- at a private birthday party,
- at a fair,
- at a blues concert,
- at a bar,
- in many other circumstances.
Theatrical performances also include improvised performances.
The contemporary art of improvisation originates from psychodramatic acting exercises from the past century, developed in the USA by theater educator – Viola Spolin. The roots of this art can be traced back to the 16th-century commedii dell’arte – an Italian form of improvised stage satire.
Today, improvisation in the United States is widely recognized as a form of social entertainment, and the self-development and improving social skills. Moreover, these skills are often transferred to the theatrical stage. Entire groups dedicated to stage improvisation are emerging. In Poland, improv has been growing in popularity for over a decade — and we hope it continues!
