A collection of parts
FRAG
MEN
TARIUM
Fragmentarium is a collection of parts that stand on their own, with no intention of forming a cohesive whole. As a stage format, it is a sequence of seemingly unrelated scenes, etudes, and fragments—fresh every single time—drawing on tools at the intersection of various theatrical forms.
our roots
A fully improvised performance
The show is fully improvised (except for the opening and closing etudes). As such, it draws on the tools of theatrical improvisation, though even the acting itself is not rooted in standard improv comedy in the Keith Johnstone tradition. By design, the scenes are grounded in dramaturgy rather than literal meaning - relying instead on symbolism, metaphor, and occasionally situational comedy.
Additionally, the actors do not rely on mime, working instead with real, minimalist props and costumes. Production elements also play a key role in the performance, buildingtension through lighting and music. The performers focus on alternative approaches to building dramaturgy beyond traditional scenes, enriching them with movement, dance, and vocal work..
This format emerged by chancewhen the ensemble’s original goal was to improvise in order to generate material for a "prepared" scene or etude. However, we approached that improvisation with a conscious departure from standard improvrelying instead on movement, props, abstraction, and non-literal meaning. As a result, the performance developed into an open form, bookended only by opening and closing choreography.
We strive to promote abstraction in art and champion this form of expression, blending artistic creation with education. Following our performances, we often invite the audience to post-show discussions where they can chat directly with the entire cast about what they experienced. Additionally, we gather anonymous feedback using response cards placed beneath the seats.
